Hi! My name is Cynthia, and, as you may have figured out from looking at this page, I have a bit of enthusiasm about Space! In fact, I have always wanted to be an astronaut, but was heartbroken to find, at the age of seven, that girls couldn't do it; especially not girls with glasses. Well, that was 23 years ago, and such restrictions don't apply to shuttle missions, so I have gone back to school to get a degree. The degree in question is to be an Electronics Engineering Technology degree from DeVry, and the reason is that NASA hires people who get this degree from DeVry! OK, so it may not make me an astronaut, but at least it's a step in the right direction, right?

Those men who stepped on alien soil brought home more than moon rocks; they brought home a feeling, that we are small in this great universe, and that all the problems of the world are insignificant compared to the vastness of space. They also have maintained, as far as I can tell from having read and heard them talk, and having met a few astronauts here and there, a sense of awe that is sadly lacking in the world today. Where is the wonder? I remember being two or three years old, trying to climb the hill that was our front yard after an ice storm, and finding a blade of grass encased in ice, and I remember that feeling, that it was the most incredible, awe-inspiring thing I had ever seen. I have spoken to children who don't see the wonder in anything as simple as a frozen blade of grass, or as wondrous as the North Georgia Mountains. I feel myself fortunate that my son maintains wonder at the little things in life; but he is only five, and I fear that this will change as he gets older and goes to public schools.

I believe that an effective space program (and I have some ideas that, if applied, could lower the costs and the impact on the environment greatly) would have untold benefit on our treasured Mother Earth, environmentally, financially (the people, that is), spiritually, and morally. | You see, we have become jaded as a species. The youth, at least the vast majority of them, do not seem to care about anything, really, anymore. They can kill, or steal, or lie, or hurt, without remorse. They can see the most wonderful things, and shrug them away. These are the future, and a grim one it is. At least a space program would be a source of hope and wonder and novelty. And, hey, the more the merrier!
